Transformation Tuesday: Clare Harvey!

June 15, 2015 By lauraforte 1 Comment

As a busy Athletic Trainer, Clare Harvey continues to be more and more determined and dedicated to taking her results to the next level.  She’s usually the “one to beat” for our competition workouts and keeps a great pace, encouraging others to push even harder!  Six months into Bay View Boot Camp, and she continues to beat her personal best fitness records month after month!!

Be inspired this week by Clare as she shares her fitness story.. in her own words!

What was your life like before Bay View Boot Camp?Clare Harvey Bay View Boot Camp

I had just moved to St. Pete without knowing a single person and was working crazy hours to keep myself busy. I was traveling all over with various athletic teams and working as many games as possible with heavy drinking on the weekends. I would try to run twice a week but I HATED running. (I was a swimmer for 10 years and was not made for land activities.)

Why did you decide to sign up for boot camp?

I was bored with running and hated writing my own workouts for the gym. I also didn’t know anyone and had zero motivation to go do something. The only reason I was running was so that my clothes continued to fit. I had taken group classes before in college and loved having the competitiveness once again.

What do you love most about your new lifestyle?

I LOVE HAVING ABS!! I will sometimes catch myself staring at myself and taking selfies of just my abs. I also have a set schedule with my workouts and am more than motivated everyday to come to class.

Why is your personal health and fitness so important to you?

I have always been athletic and love being competitive. As an athletic trainer I think it’s important for me to be fit and able to participate in different practices and rehabs with college athletes. I also know my family health history and when it comes to filling out doctor paperwork I find myself checking yes next to almost every disease/condition. I’ve been recently exposed to patients with horrible health and it terrifies me. What if that’s me one day?

What has been your results and experience from our program and eating cleaner?Clare Results Bay View Boot Camp

I think I’ve benefited most from changing my diet. I was always able to work out and remain a certain size but was never improving and toning like I wanted to see. It probably had something to do with the fact that I was eating a cupcake every single day and eating anything and everything I wanted. I could put away a whole large pizza by myself with no problems at all.

Since then I have learned about portion control and eating cleaner. I started a paleo diet and have since lost 5 lbs and feel more energized every day.  Also, since joining boot camp I have met so many people.

What advice would you give to other recent graduates in a similar situation as yourself?

Most people in my situation probably wouldn’t think that they had much to change. I would tell them that I have more fun waking up before the sun and going to boot camp than eating a cupcake for dinner.

What are your results?

In the last 2 months I have set a new PR (personal record) in almost every fit test!!

Awesome work, Clare!!  Thank you so much for sharing your story.  As a coach, you are always a pleasure to train and we love having you as part of our boot camp family.

If Clare has inspired you by her story or during class, please leave her a note below and let her know!

Amanda’s Total Transformation

May 26, 2015 By lauraforte 6 Comments

This Transformation Tuesday is 3 years in the making.  When I think of Amanda – I think of somebody who is bold, honest, has a huge heart, and truly loves life and lives every day in a BIG way.

She is sharing her truth with you today, which is no easy feat.  I bring to you Amanda’s Total Transformation story.. in her very own words!

Before Bay View Boot camp my life was very sedentary. I smoked a pack of cigarettes a day, emotionally over ate, and just became comfortable with my life.

At one point my weight was out of control weighing in at 275 lbs., for my 5 ft. 2 stature. It wasn’t till after I start boot camp in 2012 that I realized I had a lot of underlying issues. I had a lot of guilt over losing my mother tragically and then losing my dad. I was an abused wife who was beat down to nothing. I never dealt with the pain and guilt. I covered it up with food. That was my happy place.

Amanda's TransformationI ended up going to intense counseling and coming to grips with the loss. I lost about 30 lbs. from 2012 to 2013.

In 2013, I hurt my knee running a race. My doctor told me I would never run again. I gave up on life. I quit boot camp, started smoking again, and eating unhealthy. 6 months later I reversed. I started binge eating, then getting rid of it. I become very unhealthy and couldn’t stand the sight of food.

In May 2014 , I was about 215 lbs., I decided I would find a new doctor, and rejoin my boot camp family. I ended up with a hip labral tear, but through intense PT, listening to my body, and eating right, I was able to deal with it emotionally and physically.

I am running longer and stronger than ever before. As of today, my current weight is 158 lbs. I went from a size 24 to a 9/10.

I continue to struggle with the loss of my parents, but my BC family keeps me motivated and inspired. I have made many new friendships and look forward to many more.

My goal weight is 130 lbs. I love buying clothes. I love SELFIES!!!! 3 years ago , I would literally break your camera if you took a picture of me.

Amanda Harlan Selfies

My fitness is very important to me because I want my children to learn good eating habits. I want to be around to see them graduate, get married, and have children.

Since joining Bay View Boot camp, I have gained such muscle tone, learned how to eat better, and I am held accountable for my actions from my fellow boot campers. I can kayak, run, do cartwheels and love life again.

I can’t thank Laura and her team enough for saving me from myself. Truth! She never gave up on me, even when I gave up on myself. I am forever indebted to her.

Please leave Amanda a note of congratulations and encouragement below, and let her know how her story has inspired you.

Transformation Tuesday: Court Marshall

April 20, 2015 By lauraforte 8 Comments

If you’re a member of our Bay View Boot Camp family, you know who Court Marshall is.

He’s one of the first to say “I’m In!” for one of our weekly challenges.

He’ll be one of the first to post “Awesome workout!” on Facebook after 6 AM class and inspire the rest of that day’s crew to crush it.. and sometimes he’ll even come back at 6 PM for a second round!

He’ll be one of the first to welcome a new member and share a few inspirational words of wisdom.

I can’t imagine our Bay View Boot Camp family without Court – and I am so excited that he is sharing his story with all of you so you can also be inspired by his example and the changes he actively made for himself to be the person he is today.

Be inspired – read Court’s journey.. in his own words…

Most of my life I had been very active, my family was very “outdoorsy” backpacking around the country, canoeing, white water rafting etc. I played several sports, baseball, football, hockey and was always in pretty good shape. This lasted through my 20s where I played baseball at a fairly high level. At that age I could eat just about whatever I wanted without consequence. Fast forward 15 years later, throw in a failed marriage, work stress and, I hate to admit it, laziness and I found myself having gained 80 pounds. Crazy to even type those words. I didn’t gain it all at once but if you add 5-10 pounds a year over 8-10 years it’s easy to get there.

I felt, as you could imagine, horrible at that weight. Even though in my mind I was still an athlete, it was a struggle to cut my grass. I couldn’t sleep well, exhausted all the time which lead to excuses for not exercising or doing anything to get healthy. I still ate just about anything I wanted and far too much of it. It’s the feeling of being trapped at the bottom of a well looking up at the world with no way out.

Once you’re in that cycle, it’s very hard to get out of it. At some point you do reach rock bottom, a combination of some lab results and the feeling of “what the heck am I doing to myself” hit me on a Saturday afternoon in January of 2013 and I decide I would make a change. I downloaded the “Lose-It” app on my phone, set my goal and then started counting and logging calories and started riding a stationary bike. To force the change, I singed up for the November Tough Mudder with friends from work (forcing a deadline and giving me something to shoot for) and vowed to stick with it. Weird thing about me is when I eventually commit to something it’s total. Over the course of the year I lost 60 pounds, worked heavy weights in the gym and started feeling better about myself. Finished the Tough Mudder and kept moving up weights in the gym. I started to finally feel like the old me again.

Even still I felt like I was missing something. I kept my diet very strict, read all I could find on healthy eating while working out, ordered books and subscribed to websites and still plataued. I wanted to reach my Chris Platt goal (he lost almost 70 pounds to film Gaurdians of the Galaxy). I have known my friend Erin Flock for years and she was always raving about the boot camp classes she was taking and how they were life changing and so much fun. I thought, well I want to lose the last 20 pounds (or more importantly get my bodyfat down to 10-12% if only briefly) so I agreed to give Bay View Boot Camp a try to burn off some calories.

Court Marshall Before & AfterI remember my first couple of classes, it was all I could do to finish the warm-up lap and then try and catch my breath during the “warm-up” exercises before the actual workout. I realized I was no where near as in shape as I thought I was. I worked as hard as I could and was barely able to make it the whole hour. I could only physically manage a couple of classes a week as I could barely walk on off days. After Saturday classes, I would go home and collapse on my sofa, unable to do a thing the rest of thne day. I couldn’t believe other people at class were talking about going out for dinner, doing yard work etc after class. How was this possible?

All the trainers were so encouraging and motivating as well as the other people in class, just keep pushing they would say and it will come. So I did and suddenly I was getting stronger each week, even the weight I lifted in the gym started to go up again. I felt like I hadn’t felt since football practice many years before, exhausted, challenged and wanting more. Thanks to Laura, Gail, Geoff as well as Deb and Mackenzie, I was reaching new PRs every fit test. Instead of dredding fit test week, I was looking forward to it.

They say exercise is the best stress relief in the world and I couldn’t agree more; my job is extremely stressful and yet, now that I go to class 5-6 classes a week, I never really feel any stress. My moods are amazing (unless I miss a workout) and I do not feel 48 years old at all. I rediscovered my love of running sprints and pushing myself to exhaustion each class, always looking to do a little more or a little bit faster each day. While last August I couldn’t imagine doing anything after class, now I regularly go to the gym two to three evenings a week or even 2 boot camp classes a day.

I would say to everyone starting out with Bay View that do the best you are personally able to each class and stick with it because in 6 months you won’t believe where you can end up. I have now lost over 70 pounds, hoping to lose some more body fat (weight doesn’t matter to me vs my bodyfat goal of 12%). You can see by my before picture, which wasn’t at my heaviest, how bad things can be at the start. I have included 2 recent pictures as well. I wouldn’t call them after pictures as that would imply the end of the journey and I don’t see and end to this journey.

Thanks to the support and encouragement of the Bay View Boot Camp team, I have no idea what my limits are and that’s a beautiful thing but I am excited to enjoy the ride getting there. This has truly been a life changing experience for me on so many levels. I am recently engaged, feel great, 90% of the way to my Chris Platt goal (actually have some abs for the first time since I was 25) and don’t plan on quitting as long as i am upright and above ground.

If anyone else reading this finds themselves starting off in the same place, know that change is possible, it’s not easy (as Geoff says, you can’t cheat the grind) but it is more rewarding than you can possibly imagine.

Start today!!

I have also included this link to the poem Ulysses by Tennyson. The last paragraph quoted below has been inspiring to me and part of my motivation

“And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
Tho’ much is taken, much abides; and tho’
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”

Merari Cruz – a Young Lady, Athlete, and Leader

February 5, 2015 By lauraforte 6 Comments

You’re about to read a story about a young woman who turned into an athlete.

Merari approached me summer of last year and told me she wanted to take her training and physical fitness to an entirely new level because she wanted to join the Army Reserves.  She showed me the physical tests she had to complete, and from that day forward, committed to an entire lifestyle change.

What she didn’t realize, was that her inspired action filtered through to those around her, and she became a leader in the process.

Her co-workers, friends, boyfriend, family, and even other bootcampers were inspired by her hard work, and in-turn, they worked harder towards their goals.. all because of the decision Merari made.

I’m humbled and excited to share with you February’s Transformation Tuesday.. Merari Cruz.

Before Bay View Boot Camp, I was overweight, depressed and lost.  I was 170lbs., the heaviest I had ever been in my life!!

In 2012, I went for my yearly exam and realized I had gained 2 more lbs., pushing me into the Obese BMI category! Later that year I went on a trip with vetschool friends & was not feeling happy or excited about it… I was dreading the trip for months because I felt so bad about my health and my body. I even resorted to weight loss pills and diuretics as a “quick fix”. I knew that was only a band-aid. That wasn’t solving my problems or giving me any tools to turn my life around.

By late 2013, I was searching online options for “fun workouts”, new gym classes, yoga, spinning… anything! But I came across an add for Bay View Boot Camp instead. It wasn’t “an indoor activity”.  I clicked on the link for a free trial IMMEDIATELY.

Working out at the park by the water ??!! Heck yeah!! I was scared, but I was determined… I was also tired, bad habits and diet were catching up. I needed a big change and I went for it.

Laura called me on the cell phone, everything was set up, and I was excited to try it. October 15th, 2013 was my very first class. It was super fun AND I could keep up! Awesome, things are looking up again. But by early 2014 I was slipping, life got in the way again: work, boyfriend, long distance relationship, friends & fam. I was falling back to my old habits and poor food choices, thinking it was ok to eat unhealthy as long as I was making it to bootcamp once or twice a week. That wasn’t going to work. I needed something to push me into over drive. So I reached out to Laura again. I had a new goal. I wanted to join the VetCorps Army Reserves & I was still 15 lbs overweight to be considered for enlistment.

I decided to do Personal Training twice a week w/ Laura, as well as still going to BVBC 2-3x a week. Let me tell you… She whipped me into shape and I do mean WHIPPED! Three months turned into 6 very fast. I finally had the guidance and structure that I needed. I had the proper education in fitness and diet, and the accountability piece that I needed for success. She was checking my fitnesspal account, she was checking my bootcamp attendance, she was checking in on me while I was on vacation… It was a real life changer! And I got the real results I desperately wanted.

My biggest life-changer was eating breakfast every day!

Before BVBC I had horrible eating habits! I NEVER ate breakfast. I made “brunch” a daily routine, finding my own version of a “healthy breakfast” at Starbucks. Mornings filled w/ sugar and caffeine… Yeeee! I was crashing by 3pm, that’s for sure! Now, I HAVE to eat every morning by 730am. I crave my daily green smoothie; I never thought I would be saying that!! If I don’t have one first thing in the morning after working out, I will have one at some point later in the day.

Merari's TransformationNow I eat clean and fresh as much as possible every day. I believe that if “you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail” so I have started to FOOD PREP! I switched to better carbs like quinoa, sweet potato, squash and cauliflower. And better snacks like plain greek yogurt, boiled egg, fresh fruits; instead of those “100cal” processed snacks. I learned about portion control and earning your cheat meal at the end of the week… It’s NOT a cheat day!! LOL

The biggest lesson learned was: to trust the process. Progress is progress no matter how small. And when you have a setback or feel unmotivated, don’t “wait ‘til Monday” to start again. Right then and there, that day, make the decision and get back at it. Results will happen if you work hard and stay focused on the main goal.

For me, getting into shape and living a healthier lifestyle wasn’t just about the Army reserves. I ended up getting X’ed for exercise induced asthma and seasonal allergies, which was very unexpected and disappointing.

But I’ve lost 17lbs (and counting) and my body fat % dropped from 37 to 32 (new goal 27!)

SO I WIN!

Please leave a message below and congratulate Merari on her incredible journey and success!!

How Mark Changed His Lifestyle and Said “No” to Meds!

November 2, 2014 By lauraforte 1 Comment

Wishing Mark, today’s spotlight ‘Transformation Tuesday’ a Happy 3-Year Bay View Boot Camp Anniversary!

Mark PaddleboardingWhen I first met Mark 3 years ago, he wanted to prove to his doctor that he didn’t need medication to control his cholesterol levels, but do it with clean eating and exercise.

He joined our boot camp family, and it has been history ever since.  We asked Mark to share his story so that everyone can see how awesome he is!!

Here’s Mark’s “Transformation Tuesday” story.. in his own words!

October, 2014 completes my third year of training with Laura Forte and the Bay View Boot Camp family. A lot of sweat and hard work has brought me a long way. I am feeling great, eating healthy and have a ton of energy. Classes are never the same and the people that attend are so much fun and inspiring.

Before I started boot camp, I was running regularly along the bay, stretching, doing some sit-ups and push-ups. But it was not enough!

My annual physical In November, 2012 had a few numbers out of range:

Scuba MarkTotal Cholesterol was 235.  For reference, Total Cholesterol range should be 125 – 200.

HDL/LDL was 41/167.  HDL (good cholesterol) should be greater than or equal to 40.  LDL (bad cholesterol) should be less than 130 (per the lab work printout I got from my doctor).

My doctor really wanted me to start taking a prescription drug to control my Cholesterol. After some convincing, I had another fasting blood test scheduled for 4 months later.

With Laura’s awesome workout plans and following a better diet, my results were super:

Total Cholesterol was 152 (down from 235), HDL/LDL was 37/101.

Another number Laura has been tracking is our time for running a half mile. My first recorded time was 5 minutes and 33 seconds on 1/9/2012. A few weeks later I knocked 27 seconds off that time to record a 5:06. For the October, 2014 Fit Test, I beat feet to a number of 3:25, not bad for being 50 years young!

All the trainers do a great job at coming up with different routines for each days workout; I really enjoy this about Bay View Boot Camp – you never know what exercises you will be doing that day. The routines are hard and challenging, a different muscle group seems sore every week. Sometimes I am not able to finish but that’s the point – to push yourself as hard as you can.

The Bay View Boot Camp family is so awesome, that’s another thing I love about Boot Camp – encouraging each other with random call outs, high-fives and cheering you to do just one more. Mix in a few laughs and another awesome class comes Mark Afterto a close.

My fitness journey started back in high school with stretching before football practice. I have always made an effort to try to stay fit over the years but training with Laura has got me in the best shape of my life – inside and out. Laura, the trainers and the Bay View Boot Camp family make the fitness journey challenging, fun and so much better than trying to make it on your own. No matter where you are in your fitness journey, it is up to you to push yourself as hard as you can.

Will I see you in a class soon?

If we want to have a great journey, exercise is an integral part of this journey we call life.

Just in case you were wondering if I have been able to control my cholesterol with diet and exercise: blood work results for October, 2014 were all in the good range.

How awesome is Mark?!  He knew he could change his lifestyle in order to stay off meds… and he DID it!

I hope that Mark has inspired YOU by the massive changes he has made in his life.

Please show him a little love and support by leaving him a comment below.

Also…. are you ready to start making some changes in YOUR life?

We’d love for YOU to be our next success story!  Book your FREE 1×1 consultation with Laura by sending an email to laura@laurafortefitness.com.
